Kavanagh Earns 1st Victory as Charger in Blowout of Spoon River

A day after clinching the Arrowhead Conference championship, the Carl Sandburg College baseball team steamrolled Spoon River 13-3 in seven innings in nonconference action Wednesday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
The Chargers (26-11) collected 14 hits and won via the 10-run rule in a game originally slated for nine innings.

Key Moment
The Chargers had their first five hitters reach and come around to score in a five-run first inning. Braedon Blackford (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) led off with a double and scored on a homer to right from Payton Hartbank (Mattoon, Ill./Mattoon). Kevin Ulrich (Roanoke, Ill./Roanoke-Benson) added a two-run single three batters later, and Greyson Durbin (Colona, Ill./United Township) made it 5-0 with an RBI groundout.
Sandburg Star of the Game
Freshman lefty Mike Kavanagh (Knoxville, Ill./Knoxville) earned his first victory as a Charger after turning in five strong innings. Kavanagh allowed only one earned run on five hits while striking out three.
